The Candidates for SC's 1st District
How to reach the candidates and learn their positions.
Voters in the First Congressional District have seven short weeks to learn about the 19 candidates (16 Republicans and 3 Democrats) who wish to represent them in Congress. Most of the candidates have Facebook and Twitter pages as well as their own web page. They've also received coverage on Patch. All these resources provide plenty of opportunity to inform voters.

Personally, I think when you have so many candidates, it's impossible to find out what each of them stand for. If there were a debate, it would take HOURS just for their opening statements. Why doesn't the Republican Party weed out the ones who simply are not qualified and get this group down to a manageable size. I'm sure at least HALF could be eliminated.

Gretchen, I know how you feel and agree with your assessment of having so many candidates in the primary. It is overwhelming. The Republican Party doesn't discourage people from running. It isn't fair for the party to pick favorites or use a heavy hand in the primary. Hopefully, some will drop out when they are not able to attract supporters and donors.

Gretchen -- don't bother, the Democrats have the only two really good candidates - Elizabeth Colbert-Busch and Martin Skelly. Business savvy, supporters of the local economy, not professional politicians - strong supporters of our diverse community in District One.

You wouldn't happen to be a Democrat, would you, Richard?

Gretchen,
what I hear you saying is "hopefully anybody that isn't rich will drop out" cause lord knows that's all what qualifies anybody according to the Party, the politicos, and the process.
How about you call each of the candidates up and talk to them. 16 candidates is about 3 or 4 hours work. Ditch anybody that won't talk to a voter and ditch anyone that just talks the 3-point shuffle when you ask real questions.
Narrow it down to 3-4 candidates and go see them live 2-3 times. Then give the best one your money and time.
Forget about the party making it simple for you. The party is the white if the incumbent and the rich or chosen. They don't give a shit about you, me or the best qualified candidates.
If you won't or can't put out the effort to make a real choice then just for god sake don't vote for Sanford or anyone going by a boys name or running in daddy money.
