2007 Citadel Graduate Killed in Afghanistan
Sgt. Aaron X. Wittman, 28, died Jan. 10 from injuries suffered during a firefight in Afghanistan's Nangarhar Province.
A 3rd Infantry Division soldier was killed Thursday in Afghanistan, according to a Fort Stewart press release.
Sgt. Aaron X. Wittman, 28, a 2007 graduate of The Citadel, died from injuries suffered when his unit was attacked during a patrol in the Nangarhar Province of Afghanistan.
Wittman, a native of Chester, Va., was an infantryman assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 69th Armor Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team. He joined the Army in 2008 and arrived at Fort Stewart in February of 2012. His awards included the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star, according to the release.
This was Wittman's second deployment.
Sgt. Wittman had previously been awarded a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart, according to The Citadel's website. The military college says 18 Citadel graduates have died in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

This young man, and the many others that serve our country in the military, are the best examples the word "hero" that we can offer to the next generation. Courage and selfless devotion are what make real heroes, not walking onto a stage or into a sporting arena!

So sad. Prayers go out to his family. I have a son that is enlisted with the USMC & leaves for boot camp this summer. This is a parent's worst nightmare. I am very appreciative of your son's service to ensure our freedoms.

This is so tragic and at the same time so honorable to have died doing what he felt he was "called" to do. My prayers go out for his family because death is no friend to any of us. We salute his sacrifices and we must remember his dedication and integrity. May God bless and keep you in His loving care. Diane Hamby

My prayers go out to the family and friends of this soldier. He paid the ultimate price for freedom to our country. He died a hero.

No disrespect intended toward SGT Wittman but I'm wondering why a Citadel grad was enlisted instead of an officer.
and to Lilo, I'm sorry but Afghanistan has nothing to do with our security or freedoms. We could have done the same thing to Al Quida with a firebase, an air Mobile battalion and Drones.

Yes SGT Wittman was a Citadel graduate, Class of 2007. He was deployed along with my now son-in-law during their senior year. He returned home, finished school and continued his Army career. He told my daughter he didn't want to be in the back, he wanted to be up front...in the fight....making a difference. Aaron was an amazing young man who loved his country enough to serve.
George/LCD: For you or anyone else to question anything about his life is inexcusable

You answered the question. He wasn't a Citadel grad when he was enlisted. Just a question, no disrespect intended.
