Bessinger's Takes Readers' Choice for BBQ

A local staple since 1960, West Ashley Patch readers chose Bessinger's Bar-B-Q as the best place in town to get your pulled pork fix

The smell of slow roasted pork mingles with buring oak and hickory logs at the corner of Savannah Hwy. and White Oak Drive every day as Bessinger's Bar-B-Q slow roasts its pork for 18 hours before serving up its classic Big Joe pulled pork sandiwches.

The iconic red barn along Highway 17 has been around since the 1960s when Thomas Bessinger opened his first restaurant, though the restaurant can trace it's lineage back to 1946 when Thomas' father, Joseph "Big Joe" Bessinger opened Eat at Joe's Restaurant in Holly Hill.

Now generations of Charlestonians have eaten Bessinger's pulled pork with its signature tangy mustard based barbecue sauce, and 51 percent of the West Ashley Patch readers who participated in our poll chose Bessinger's as the best place in town to get barbecue.

Fiery Ron's Home Team BBQ came in a close second with 34 percent of the vote, and West Ashley based food truck Hello My Name is BBQ got 13 percent of the vote for third place.

I love their onion "doughnuts", as you call them, too. And truth be told, having grown up in West Ashley, I judge all other BBQ against Bessinger's, and most of them fall far short. I do like both Home Team and Hello My Name is BBQ as well, but no one comes close to matching the mustard based sauce at Bessinger's.

If there was full disclosure in this article, it would state that 15 people voted for Bessinger's while even less (10 folks) voted for Fiery Ron's. Not a scientific poll at all, as the voting page said: http://westashley.patch.com/articles/readers-choice-best-bbq
