Deputy Arrested on Assault Charge

State authorities allege Deputy Chris Davis beat suspect during West Ashley traffic stop.

The state's law enforcement agency has charged a Charleston County sheriff's deputy with assault and battery after he allegedly beat a man during a November 2012 traffic stop.

The charges stem from an Orleans Road stop in which Davis allegedly pulled motorist Davante Pittman from his car and beat the man after the deputy alleges the suspect tried to push him.

A dashcam video of the arrest has been widely circulated in the media, and though it records Davis punching the 19-year-old suspect in the head multiple times, the alleged resistance from the suspect is not apparent.

There has been a civil suit filed in the incident. That's in addition to the charges lodged against Davis today. If guilty, the 27-year-old deputy faces 30 days in jail and a $500 fine for the third-degree assault and battery charges.
