Deputy Shoots Suspect After Chase, SLED Investigating

Hwy. 17 chase results in suspect being shot by deputies.

A man who allegedly led a Charleston County Sheriff's Deputy on a chase Sunday afternoon is in the hospital with two gunshot wounds.

Around 12:20 p.m. Sunday a concerned citizen reported a U-Haul truck being driven recklessly in the McClellanville area. The deputy located and attempted to stop a U-Haul truck on northbound Hwy. 17, but the driver sped away, according to a CCSO statement.

The deputy pursued the truck into Georgetown County approximately three miles before the truck stopped at the Pole Yard Boat Landing off Pole Yard Way. The driver of the U-Haul truck allegedly refused to heed the deputy's commands upon exiting the truck and was tazed by the deputy, according to the statement.

The driver allegedly continued to struggle with the deputy after being tazed and was able to flee on foot. The deputy chased and eventually caught up with the suspect at which point the two struggled again, ending with the deputy firing two shots at the suspect.

The suspect was hit in the torso and arm, and was taken to Georgetown County Hospital for treatment. His name has not been released.
