Details Emerging About Remains Found Near Greenway

Bones were found close to 19th Century cemetery but show modern filings

Authorities are still trying to determine the identity of the human remains recovered near the West Ashley Greenway Friday, but several details emerged Saturday when the Charleston County Sheriff's Office released the initial incident report on the find.

Two men reported finding a skull sitting atop recently fallen leaves in the wooded area near the Greenway behind First Assembly of God Church at 2957 Savannah Hwy. at 5:40 p.m. Friday. Deputies found human leg bones approximately 40-50 yards away from the skull. They also found several gravestones in the area, most of them dating to the mid 1800s, and one as recent as 1945.

The lower jaw was missing from the skull, but one of the deputies on scence noted several modern fillings in the teeth that remained, indicating that it had probably not come from one of the grave sites. Investigators also noted the skull was relatively clean and speculated that it's position on top of leaves could have been due to being transported by animals.
