NORTH CHARLESTON — A former Fort Dorchester High softball volunteer assistant coach has been accused of sexually assaulting a player in 2010, while he was still in that position.
Michael Dean Daniel, 42, was arrested and charged with criminal sexual misconduct with a minor in March 7. He is out on bond.
According to the North Charleston Police incident report, the victim said two years ago this summer Daniel allegedly sexually assaulted her while driving her to her friend's house. She was on the Fort Dorchester High softball team. In addition to being her assistant coach, Daniel was also described as a family friend in the report. According to the report, the victim alleges this was one of multiple incidents.
When asked why she hadn't come forward sooner, the victim said she decided to finally come forward because Daniel allegedly called her, according to the report.
According to Dorchester County School District Two spokeswoman Pat Raynor, volunteer assistant coaches are screened, and Daniel is no longer an assistant coach or volunteer at any of their schools.
Ashley Ridge softball coach Angi Brush confirmed Wednesday that Daniel volunteered for her team last year, but was "let go" within a month of working there. She declined to comment on why he was let go.
