Gender: The Elephant in the Room of the Presidential Race

Pulling in or pushing away the coveted women's vote?

The fight for the “working women” in the Presidential campaign began in earnest last week with Hilary Rosen’s claim that Ann Romney is “out of touch with women’s issues” because, while Mrs. Romney is nice woman and to be admired for raising a family and overcoming a disease, she just has no experience with the economic issues women are facing since she has “never actually worked a day in her life.” Understanding their voting power, Ms. Rosen comments were directed at women, who constitute 46 percent of the workforce and 52 percent of the voters.

The aggregate power of women voters will ultimately determine the message "niches" used in the 2012 White House bid. Ms. Rosen’s “wedge-driving” remarks are clearly aimed at the marketing niche of working women, in an effort to alienate this significant voting block from Ms. Romney.

Rosen’s statements would be amusing, if they weren’t so offensive.  Ms. Rosen is a campaign strategist for the president, and certainly understands the consequences of her comments. She must also have calculated that the Democratic Party—the party that hails itself as the party of “choice” for women—has taken Ms. Romney’s choice of homemaker as a career, the path of board membership on civic and political organizations, the life of volunteer service (impacting lives of women and children through equine therapy, literacy outreach, and sports programs for children with severe disabilities) and devalues the woman and these significant and meaningful contributions.

Ms. Rosen attempted to create a “we vs. they” scenario by vilifying Ms. Romney’s choice as a homemaker, and making her appear “lesser than” the “working” woman.

Mobilizing the coveted universal, married and working woman is challenging, as this universe transcends traditional segmentation and crosses over socio-economic strata. No matter what explanation is provided, in the name of work/life balance, many women in this category do not fully and consistently “lean into” politics in the same fashion as men.  At some point many women stop demanding ideological politics because the “realities of life” carry a series of other demands.

Ms. Rosen attempted to polarize working women against Ms. Romney by saying Ms. Romney “never actually worked a day in her life.”  The message here is that by not working somehow Ms. Romney is “out of touch” with the day-to-day struggles of the working woman. Because the economy ranks highest in the wheelhouse of concerns for working women, one can only conclude these comments were purposeful and calculated. In light of a recent report from the Pew Research Center that found "women represent the only group for whom employment growth has lagged behind population growth in the recovery."

By differentiating Ms. Romney, Rosen implied that Republicans do not understand the struggles of working women and therefore cannot represent them as well as their counterparts.

John Sculley, former President of Pepsi and CEO of Apple once said, "No great marketing decisions have ever been made on qualitative data."

Numbers show that wedge issues in niche, female-centric markets, will continue to dominate the female vote. Politics is the war of moving numbers and the flexibility to message to women depends largely on understanding their complexities and real concerns. Ms. Rosen’s comments are made to strip the GOP of a strong and credible female voice by painting it as “out of touch” with real women, who are the backbone of both parties. Every woman should understand the strength of her voice. The travesty with this latest attempt at dividing women is that no one wins.

This war on women the DEMS keep talking about is ridiculous. When Sara Palin was running, the DEMS were complaining because she had 5 children and wasn't staying home with them. Ann Romney stayed at home, and now they complain about that. The women in Obama's White House earn considerably LESS than the men. So, WHO is treating women as 2nd class citizens??

Some misleading arguments here. To follow up the "offensive" label, justifying it because the speaker works for the president is simply a false statement. Ms. Rosen does not work for the Obama campaign.
And by the way, it was Romney who referenced his wife's status, and Ms. Rosen had a right to respond to that. Being a good mother is hard work, but being a good mother and holding down a job is enormously hard work. When people would praise Ethel Kennedy for having so many children, my mother's response was always "Yes, but she only had to 'have' them. She had plenty of help with everything else". Believe me, Ms. Romney could afford all the help she needed.
Working women who take care of their kids could use some help, and certainly might want some contraceptive help from their health insurance plan, if they have one. Insurance companies are happy to help out there, contraception is way cheaper than maternity and child health care.

IF you want contraception, go to work for someone other than the Catholic Church. Why does the government think it can tell EVERYONE what to believe ? Why is the government's responsibility to keep people supplied with contraception anyway? The DEMS are carrying things to far with GOVERNMENT HAND OUTS !

I am glad for Mrs. Romney's response because it helps all the single moms or stay at home moms who want to make the decision to "raise their children" just as the many moms with young children and need government assistance in order to accomplish it. There is no difference in any mother who wants to stay home with her children (all children are the same), therefore this should make the issue for ANY mother that wants to stay home and raise her children, whether they have a husband who can support the family or not or no husband in the home at all. Either way, every mother loves her children and would LOVE to stay at home and raise her child(ren). Great job for this issue that defends EVERY MOTHER who wants to stay home with her children, rather than the government trying to make her go to work and the government want to provide child care instead. I love that this issue has come forward.

To Love It: I suppose by now you have heard that, during his 1994 Senate campaign against Ted Kennedy, Mitt Romney proposed that the state provide child-care or child-care funding for economically-disadvantaged moms so that they would have "no excuse" for staying at home with their kids and could, thus, know "the dignity of work."

In other words, Mr. Romney was doing everything BUT defending "every mother who wants to stay home with her children." Indeed, Mr. Romney was proposing not only that the government make those moms go to work but also that, as you put it, "the government...provide child care" so that they would then have, as he put it then, "no excuse" for not working.

How hypocritical can one be? Mr. Romney yaks about the "dignity" of his wife's choice to be a stay-at-home mom, but wants to make it impossible for economically-disadvanted women to choose the same "dignity." Indeed, he clearly implies that the only "dignity" they should know is that of leaving their children at a government-funded child-care facility and going off to work.

Oh, my!

The Dems will always justify their comments, ("if I offended anyone"...Palin worked too much, AR's not working enough, blah blah) when they step in to it. They exemplify class warfare, and loath Repub females, so who really is spearheading the so-called War on Women? I suppose all the rich, Hollywood liberals really understand working women, because the likes of Susan Sarandon and The View gaggle shop for their own food, do their own banking, etc. The hypocrisy continues...

More "Us vs. Them" in the Mommy Wars. Really, working, at home, both, full time, part time, with help or without - enough already! The woman has faised FIVE BOYS??? Man, that's work. I don't care if she's had "help" or not. My working mom friends think that's work; my at home friends think that's work. In the end, I think Ms. Rosen's comments will serve to help the Romney campaign rather than hurt it.

not so amazing about lemmings...but beyond belief how intelligent people spin the truth (aka lying) to con/trick lemmings...

forget the war...just look at the facts...

a Romney aide was unable to answer a straight forward question about the former governor's position on the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009, which Obama signed into law amid heavy Republican opposition.

Top 10 Shocking Attacks from the GOP's War on Women
1) Republicans not only want to reduce women's access to abortion care, they're actually trying to redefine rape. After a major backlash, they promised to stop. But they haven't yet. Shocker.
2) A state legislator in Georgia wants to change the legal term for victims of rape, stalking, and domestic violence to "accuser." But victims of other less gendered crimes, like burglary, would remain "victims."
3) In South Dakota, Republicans proposed a bill that could make it legal to murder a doctor who provides abortion care. (Yep, for real.)
4) Republicans want to cut nearly a billion dollars of food and other aid to low-income pregnant women, mothers, babies, and kids.
5) In Congress, Republicans have a bill that would let hospitals allow a woman to die rather than perform an abortion necessary to save her life.
(to be contd, 6-10)

(contd) forget the war...look at the facts...mo facts, 6-10

6) Maryland Republicans ended all county money for a low-income kids' preschool program. Why? No need, they said. Women should really be home with the kids, not out working.

7) And at the federal level, Republicans want to cut that same program, Head Start, by $1 billion. That means over 200,000 kids could lose their spots in preschool.

8) Two-thirds of the elderly poor are women, and Republicans are taking aim at them too. A spending bill would cut funding for employment services, meals, and housing for senior citizens.

9) Congress just voted for a Republican amendment to cut all federal funding from Planned Parenthood health centers, one of the most trusted providers of basic health care and family planning in our country.

10) And if that wasn't enough, Republicans are pushing to eliminate all funds for the only federal family planning program. (For humans. But Republican Dan Burton has a bill to provide contraception for wild horses. You can't make this stuff up).

anyone know any GOP legislation favoring women's rights...or DEM opposition to any existing women's rights legislation...eg, any DEM want to repeal ledbetter...

A woman who chooses to speak in defense of women only when it offers political profitability? That would be Karen Floyd, political opportunist.

A 30 year-old, female law student recently spoke quite eloquently on behalf of millions of women before a congressional committee. In return for her effort to articulate the well-established fact that access to contraceptive medication is a women’s health issue that goes far beyond just birth-control, she was “vilified” for three consecutive days on national radio by GOP policymaker Rush Limbaugh.

Though millions of American women and men---and any number of Mr. Limbaugh’s now former sponsors---rose up in disgust to defend Ms. Fluke against such a reprehensible attack on her character and, by extension, on the character of any woman who might stray from the GOP line, the silence from Republicans such as Karen Floyd was deafening.

However, Ms. Floyd seems to have suddenly found her voice. Positing a patently false and overblown---Ms. Rosen, who is not, as Ms. Floyd knows, “a campaign strategist for the president,” was hardly “vilifying” Ann Romney’s vocational choice---interpretation of Ms. Rosen’s words, she has now become a megaphone for defending stay-at-home moms. If you didn’t know the GOP’s stance on issues affecting women, you might think she actually cared.

From deafening silence to amplified demagoguery---that defines the volume range of a political hack---oops, opportunist.

This is typical of the Palladian View. This time a PINK ELEPHANT was found in the room. Karen Floyd seems to be hallucinating, inaccurately projecting Rosen’s statements onto the Democrats. The DNC leadership is disaffecting the campaign from Rosen’s comments as well they should because they do not reflect the view of the Democratic Party. The Republicans need to distance themselves from this pundit but they don’t. They seem to embrace the rhetoric.

George Herbert Walker Bush could not balance a budget despite encouraging us to all learn lip-reading. Clinton presented GW Bush with a surplus budget, and W drove it way into deficit. Yet, you blame Dems for poor money management. Whether it fits your pre-determined opinion or not, Obama inherited an economy in free fall, and it is turning around. What is your problem with Dems that you are so adamant about their failures compared to Republicans? Is it anger? Did you have a bad experience in your youth? CAN THE USA SURVIVE GIVEN THE FOLLOWING?

The folks who are getting free stuff, don't like the folks who are paying for the free stuff, because the folks who are paying for the free stuff can no longer afford to pay for both the free stuff and their own stuff.

The folks who are paying for the free stuff want the free stuff to stop, and the folks who are getting the free stuff want even more free stuff on top of the free stuff they are already getting!

Now... The people who are forcing the people to pay for the free stuff have told the people who are RECEIVING the free stuff, that the people who are PAYING for the free stuff, are being mean, prejudiced, and racist.

So... The people who are GETTING the free stuff have been convinced they need to hate the people who are paying for the free stuff by the people who are forcing some people to pay for their free stuff, and giving them the free stuff in the first place.

We have let the free stuff giving go on for so long that there are now more people getting free stuff than paying for the free stuff.

It doesn't say anything about democracy ceasing to exist, although you could extrapolate and infer it means the end of capitalism, or at least violate the first principle of capitalism. Not sure if this was Jefferson's quote, or if it was a translation he was working of from a French economics treatise.
Americans have made it pretty clear they do not want pure capitalism any more than they want pure socialism. There is a blend which supports the Judeo-Christian-Islamic requirements for supporting the poor, while at the same time allowing for personal growth and freedom. After all, we are the lowest taxed country in the developed world, and yet all agree there ought to be a safety net so people do not simply die in the streets.

@Gretchen: perhaps you should not take things out of context. The basis for the statement made by Jefferson was his translation of Destutt de Tracy's Treatise on Political Economy.

@gretchen: "...so get off it !"

agree the meaning is close if not the same...but those who profess to be christians may want to stay clear of tj...eg, he say:

"And the day will come, when the mystical generation of Jesus, by the Supreme Being as His Father, in the womb of a virgin, will be classed with the fable of the generation of Minerva, in the brain of Jupiter."

"forget the bumper sticker "war on women"...and bs fact spin... look at the facts and make yo decision which party supports women's (human) rights...promotes the general welfare."

STANLEY .... "free stuff like roads, schools/education, police/fire protection, healthcare, programs for special needs children" I hate to tell you this... but that is not FREE STUFF. We pay for it in our REAL ESTATE TAXES or in our RENT if we do not own a house. The problem is the free stuff ... like SS disability for those people who burn out their brains on drugs .....free housing and food stamps for people who are too lazy to work, and keep having one kid after another. That's the kind of FREE STUFF I am talking about.

Free stuff like cell phones and plan subsidies.

http://www.fcc.gov/guides/lifeline-and-link-affordable-telephone-service-income-eligible-consumers

This one makes me want to regurgitate. The broke State of South Carolina and our Federal government.

http://www.thestate.com/2012/03/11/2187000/bailout-funds-rescue-some-struggling.html

There’s a few others enumerated on this website.

http://www.usa.gov/Citizen/Topics/Benefits.shtml

Some of these programs are meaningful. I really could’ve used a number of them of them while I was out of work and struggled, but I couldn’t qualify. I could have persisted but I was way too busy trying to start a business.

doubt you hate to tell me anything...but hate to tell you: there is NO free stuff...we pay for it all...as we should...

"the problem is" you and yo ilk dont want to pay yo fair share to provide quality educational programs, special needs programs, subsistence to the biblical least...as a christian you should, "sell all you have and give to the poor"...ie;

free housing and food stamps for people who are who have not had the benefits you and yo ilk have had...only a small percentage are too lazy to work...
the unemployment rate is above 8%. are all these people too lazy too work...

do you have a percentage of those who are too lazy to work vice those who really need help...or do you just judge by the color of their skin...
