Search for Suspected Bridge Jumper
Authorities looking for woman who may have jumped on April 12.
Authorities are searching the Cooper River today for a Wadmalaw Island woman police believe jumped from the Ravenel Bridge on Thursday.
South Carolina Highway Patrol and Mount Pleasant police reported on April 12, just before 6 a.m., that they found a black Honda Accord running in outside lane of the second diamond the bridge.
The car belongs to 23-year-old Elizabeth Ashley Ward, according to a Charleston police report.
Police found an Apple iPad and headphones straddling the railing of the bridge near the running Honda, a report states.
Authorities began their search for Ward at sunrise this morning, said Charles Francis, police spokesman. The search will continue until dark, he said.
If confirmed, this jumping incident will be the second suicide from the Ravenel Bridge in four months. In December, a Nigerian pharmacy resident at MUSC jumped from the bridge. It took roughly two weeks to recover Tosin Oyelowo's body from the water.
