Sofa Super Store Closing

Beset by the poor economy, furniture chain will close two remaining locations.

After 20 years of business, Sofa Super Store is closing its remaining two stores in the Charleston area.

Foundering in the tight economy, nearly four years after a fire killed firefighters at its West Ashley location, the chain said it could no longer make a go of it, according to a Post and Courier story.

A 2007 fire at the chain's West Ashley location killed nine Charleston firefighters. That store reopened and then closed earlier this year. The chain will close both its Mount Pleasant and North Charleston locations.

I don't believe anyone in the community is sad to see them go. While I certainly don't want to see their employees lose their jobs, this company did a very poor job after the infamous fire at their West Ashley location with public relations. Not only did they press ahead with advertising furniture on television and in the newspaper, there was no sense of appreciation for the loss of the firefighters by the company in their advertising, no quick move to set up memorial fund and just generally no significant public display of apology to those who lost loved ones. Sofa Super Store should have hired a PR firm to help them recover from this, becoming more community oriented and setting up outreaches. They were not very publically forgiving or apologetic at all. The other thing that I find extremely incredulous is the fact that they continued to use the Sofa Super Store name. That name will forever be associated with one of the greatest tragedies to ever befall Charleston. It conjures up negative images in my mind. Why one would even consider keeping the name on the store is beyond me. It was a horrible idea and their marketing and public relations personnel did not serve them well at al. They should have kept the name "Rooms For Less" as their former Wappoo Road store was originally known and dropped the Sofa Super Store moniker all together, out of respect for the lives lost. Sofa Super Store was undoubtedly responsible for their own demise.
