Coming out of the Great Recession empty storefronts are pretty common, but we want to know what Patch.com users want to see fill those empty business properties

A long time ago this empty store at the corner of Sam Rittenberg Boulevard and Ashley Hall Road held a Bookbag book store.

More recently the owner of the Pitt Stop convenience store next door wanted to open a liquor store here, but his request to change the zoning on the property was turned down after residents of the surrounding neighborhoods came out in force to oppose it.

So what should go here now?

West Ashley has far too many automobile dominated strip centers. There should be an effort to revitalize West Ashley with a more urban form. Buildings should address the streets and not have parking between buildings and streets. The goal should be to accommodate pedestrians and create a more cohesive condition. Fewer curb cuts along arterial streets would also make driving safer. Look at the Avondale area. It works!

The entire corner should be demolished and a more modern, updated and WORTHWHILE retail building constructed here, with urban streetscape, a brick wall in front and parking behind. A longtime, prominent Charleston attorney (and West Ashley resident) owns this property. I cannot understand why he has allowed it to fall into such disrepair. The convenience store and these two vacant buildings need to go! It's disgraceful.
