Secular Humanists, AFFA Screening 'God Loves Uganda'

— by Jason Gregory

The American Evangelical exportation of intolerance, particularly against the LGBT, has reached a new dangerous level. Most recently, the Ugandan 'Kill the Gays' bill has been making international headlines. This notorious bill, which is largely American influenced, seeks to harshen the punishment and criminalization of homosexuality.
The Secular Humanists of the Lowcountry together with The Alliance For Full Acceptance are sponsoring a screening of the film presented by The Park Circle Film Society at 7pm on August 3, 2013 at 4820 Jenkins Avenue, North Charleston. This screening is open to the public.
God Loves Uganda follows Evangelical leaders in America and Uganda, as well as politicians and missionaries, as they attempt the radical task of eliminating "sexual sin" and converting Ugandans to fundamentalist Christianity.  Interviews and hidden camera footage give unprecedented access into the rising influence of the evangelical movement in Uganda and the dangerous repercussions of intolerance.
On why he made the film, Academy Award® winning director Roger Ross Williams said, "My father was a religious leader in the community and my sister is a pastor. I went to church every Sunday and sang in the choir. But for all that the church gave me, for all that it represented belonging, love and community, it also shut its doors to me as a gay person. That experience left me with the lifelong desire to explore the power of religion to transform lives or destroy them."
The Secular Humanists of the Lowcountry is an educational nonprofit that promotes humanism as a valid contribution to public discourse and strives to maintain the First Amendment. The Alliance For Full Acceptance is a nonprofit that aims to eliminate prejudice based on sexual orientation and gender identity. The Park Circle Film Society's goal is to enrich the community through film.
God Loves Uganda premiered at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival and is currently playing at film festivals around the world. The film will broadcast on ITVS (PBS) in 2014. For more information on God Loves Uganda and to view a trailer visit http://www.godlovesuganda.com.
