The Lively Streets of Charleston: Jack And Owen McKenzie

Jack and Owen McKenzie took some downtime Thursday evening to brush up on their busking skills on King Street.

The brothers from Wadmalaw Island are participating in the O'Connor Method Violin Camp in Charleston.

Jack, 10, has been playing violin for three years. Owen, 8, picked up the guitar about six months ago, according to their mother Wendy, who serves on the board for the O'Connor Method's Charleston organization.

The brothers will be performing with the other 148 campers tonight at 7 p.m. at Memminger Auditorium.

The have two performances scheduled for Friday. The first is at 4 p.m. at the Circular Congregational Church on Meeting Street where the group will perform "Amazing Grace" in the same location the song was first performed in North America, Wendy McKenzie said. The second performance is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Memminger Auditorium.

Asked what his favorite type of music to play is Jack said:

"Anything but classical. I don't like classical."

Luckily for him the O'Connor Method uses American music including folk songs like "Oh Susanna" to teach children how to play their instruments, his mom explained.
