Republicans in Charleston County will now choose its next chairman from among two candidates instead of three.
Jonathan Hoffman removed himself from consideration and endorsed Mark Smith for chair. Smith is running against John Steinberger. Either Smith or Steinberger will replace Joe Bustos, who resigned unexpectedly last week.
Bustos had only been chair since April, when he defeated incumbent Lin Bennett. He is also running for mayor of Mount Pleasant.
