For the last six years The Citadel’s freshman class has numbered more than 700, and this year is expected to be no different for the class of 2017 which will report this Saturday, August 17, to begin their leadership journey.
“We had 2,958 applications this year—the most we’ve ever had,” said Admissions Director Lt. Col. John Powell, ’77, USMCR. “Students today are savvy—they’re looking for value, and the combination of leadership training and academics is an attractive opportunity.”
This marks the fifth consecutive year that the college has broken all previous admission application records.
Minority applicants have increased 27 percent from last year while the number of applicants from South Carolina continues to climb with a 24 percent increase over the last two years.
During their first year, the class of 2017 will learn the best qualities of character, physical fitness, ethics, honor, integrity and duty through a disciplined, military environment. Learning to follow is the first step in learning how to become a leader.
As the journey progresses, the cadets will take on additional responsibilities as they earn leadership positions.
“A Citadel education is more than just a degree,” said Powell. “It’s the road that students who are determined to succeed take to become leaders.”
