RiverDogs Power Past Drive

Claudio Custodio homers twice to lead Charleston to victory

— By Derek Diesner GREENVILLE, SC — Claudio Custodio homered in the eighth and ninth innings to propel the RiverDogs to a 9-7 victory Sunday afternoon over the Greenville Drive. It was another back-and-forth battle between the Southern Division leaders Charleston RiverDogs and the Southern Division cellar dwellers Greenville Drive at Fluor Field at The West End in South Atlantic League action. With the win, the RiverDogs improve to 24-16 overall and claim first place all to themselves in the Southern Division standings for the first time this season. Bishop England Defeats Indian Land, 4-3, in Sudden Death OT

Saturday's win in Gilbert was the Battling Bishop's 16th state title.

With just seconds left in sudden death overtime, Bishop England's Joel Bunting scored the winning goal to defeat Indian Land 4-3 in the Class 2A Men's Soccer State Championship. Saturday's win in Gilbert was the Battling Bishop's 16th state title.  The Warriors (19-5) scored the first two points of the game but Bishop England (19-7-1) came back to cut the lead to 2-1 with a goal from Bunting. Midway through the first half and Bishop England's Mateo Gomez lands a goal to tie the score at 2.  Gomez was able to score again to take the lead, 3-2, but seconds later the Warriors made a goal with 14 minutes left in the first half.  A lot attempts were made to score in the second half but neither team was able to get the ball in the net and the …

Despite a late rally Bishop England couldn't overcome Chesnee in the last game of the AA HIgh School Baseball Championship Series Friday

The Bishops left a lot of runners on base in their AA State Championship series fianle loss to Chesnee Friday. The Eagles pulled into the lead with a run in the fourth inning and extended it to 5-0 after adding another four runs in the fifth. Bishop England threatened a comeback, plating three runs in the seventh then loading the bases again before Chesnee managed to make the game's final out, the Post and Courier reports (subscription required). Bishop England also loaded the bases in the third inning before a double play sent the Bishops back into the field. Academic Magnet Wins 2nd Straight Girls Soccer Title

Tiebreaking penalty kick lifts Academic Magnet to AA title.

Academic Magnet was two minutes away from back-to-back defeats in the state girls AA soccer finals after spending much of the game in Christ Church Episcopal School's end without a goal. It appeared that the Raptors were on the brink of being disappointed for the second year in a row. But Raptors star Kallie Peurifoy converted a steal and snapped a shot past the CCEs goalie and tied the score. After two 10-minute overtimes and two 5-minute sudden death periods did not break the tie, the match went to penalty kicks. Each team converted their first five attempts, but Christ Church missed its sixth. Bishop England, Chesnee Face-off for State Title Tonight

Bishop England is one game away from its sixth state title in 11 years, but it has to get past Chesnee one more time to do it.

Since 2003 the Bishop England baseball team has done very well in odd numbered years. In fact in every odd numbered year since 2003 the school has won the AA State Title. The Bishops are 27 outs away from winning their sixth title in 11 years, but they'll have to get past a Chesnee team that shut them out in the series opener. Bishop England came back Wednesday to take an early lead in Game 2, and held on for the win, but lost their Game 3 starting pitcher to an on-field injury suffered when a throw struck Tradd Lowman in the head while he was running bases, knocking him out of the line-up. Patrick Clarey, who pitched Game 1 will take the mound for the Bishops Friday.

The Academic Magnet High School girls' soccer team defeated Christ Church Episcopal on Friday afternoon in Gilbert.

Update: After two halves of regulation, four OTs and five PKs, the girls' AA soccer title match between Academic Magnet and Christ Church was still tied. Bishops Even Championship Series With Game 2 Win Over Eagles

Bishop England kept hopes for another state title alive and evened the series with Chesnee Wednesday

The Battling Bishops took an early lead and never looked back in Game 2 of the AA State Championship Series. Bishop England tied the series with Chesnee on a 3-1 win on the back of a dominant pitching performance from left-hander Ryan Rogers, the Post and Courier reports (subscription required). The Bishops struck early, plating all three runs in an explosive second inning during which eight men went to the plate. Jonathan Browning knocked in the first two runs with a single up the middle. Later in the inning Reed Fosberry singled to right to bring in the other run. Bishops Battle Past Raptor for Lower State Win

After a scoreless game and two scoreless overtimes penalty kicks decided the S.C. 2013 Lower State champion

Nobody likes a tie, so when Bishop England and Academic Magnet were both scoreless after regulation and two overtimes, the 2013 Lower State AA Boys Soccer title game went to penalty kicks. The Bishops outscored the Raptors 3-1 with goals from Drew Costa, Nick Saunders and Joel Bunting, the Post and Courier reports (subscription required). Bishop England will play Indian Land for the State Title at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Gilbert High School. The Bishops will be playing for a record 16th state championship.

Bishops Drop Championship Series Opener to Chesnee

A couple of late inning runs lifted Chesnee over Bishop England the opening game of the State AA Championship series

After plating a run in the sixth inning to break a scoreless tie, Bishop England gave up two late runs to drop the first game in the best-of-three State AA Championship series to Chesnee. The Eagles took the lead away in the wild bottom half of the same inning. The tying run came from Colton Grant who singled, then advanced to second on a wild pitch. He scored on Drew Fisher's double, though Fisher was caught trying to turn it into a triple for the second out of the inning, the Post and Courier reports (subscription required). The next batter Jimmy Yoos got to first on a single and then to second on an error before he was knocked in for the winning score on a single from Jimmy Yelton.
