Implementing South Carolina's new Voter ID law before November elections looks like a long shot.
A new South Carolina Voter ID law looks increasingly like a long shot to affect the November general election. The law, praised by S.C. Republicans as one of the top new pieces of legislation in the 2012 State House, was shot down by the justice department again on Monday. And on Tuesday, a lawsuit filed by South Carolina against the U.S. government received a new timetable. The Associated Press reported today that on Tuesday the judges considering the case had reschedule oral arguments for the end of August. Gov. Nikki Haley, a strong supporter of the new law, took to Facebook Tuesday and vowed to keep fighting: "We won't let this go." Assistant U.S. Attoney General Thomas Perez again shot down the law under the voting rights act on …

Some officials suggest elections officials be on alert, others say not so fast.
Amid recent allegations of voter fraud in recent S.C. elections some state officials say elections officials should be on high alert during the primary, but others say further evidence is needed. "It should be noted that state officials will be closely monitoring the primary election," S.C. State Attorney General Alan Wilson said. On Wednesday Wilson requested an investigation by the S.C. State Law Enforcement Division into findings that suggest votes were cast under the names of 900 deceased individuals. Some state officials say the findings have serious and negative implications for the Jan. 21 state primary election. "The information brought to light causes concern for this election, and those yet to come, until steps like Voter ID are …

The Attorney General's Office has requested a formal probe into possible voter fraud.
S.C. State Elections Commission officials are requesting a probe into the fraudulent use of the names of 900 dead people in recent state elections. State Election Commission Chairman John Hudgens and Executive Director Marci Andino announced their support of the call for an investigation into possible voter fraud in state elections on Thursday. In a statement released Wednesday, S.C. Attorney General Alan Wilson reported the discovery of evidence that was uncovered by Department of Motor Vehicles Director Kevin Shwedo during a recent review of data related to the state's controversial new voter ID law. “Director Shwedo’s research has revealed evidence that over nine hundred deceased people appear to have ‘voted’ in recent elections in …

Advocates of the law hope to see it in place before the 2012 election.
The battle over the South Carolina voter ID law is not over and state leaders say they will take the fight back to the U.S. Justice Department. State lawmakers said they plan to fight U.S. Justice Department for rejecting the controversial voter ID law on the basis of racial discrimination. Officials with the S.C. Attorney General's office said they are moving forward with plans to file an appeal but would not confirm plans for a lawsuit. "We plan to exhaust every legal action at our disposal," Communications Director for the Attorney General’s office Mark Plowden said. “We do expect to file a challenge. The legal documents to appeal will be filed at the end of the month.” Although the law's co-sponsor Larry Grooms acknowledged the law is …

State Identification Card Day will be held Sept. 28.
South Carolina residents who don't have a state ID can get free transportation to and from the DMV on Sept. 28. S.C. DMV officials and Gov. Nikki Haley announced Wednesday "State Identification Card Day," an effort to get S.C. residents the identification they need to comply with the new voter ID law. The General Assembly passed the measure that requires voters to show a state-issued ID in order to cast their ballots. The U.S. Justice Department is reviewing the law to determine whether it meets federal civil rights guidelines. Citizens who need a ride to the DMV on Sept. 28 should call 1-855-STATE ID (1-855-782-8343) toll-free before Sept. 22 to request transportation. DMV representatives will ask citizens for their name, address, …

Nikki Haley is as phony as Jim DeMint and Joe Wilson. She is for "right to work" but then she protects Henry McMaster and Rick Quinn when these two crooks used the shield of SC to attack me using their manufactured lies and RAPED me and revoked my securities license as if they had any basis to do so. Maybe she will soon go to Argentina and hopefully will never make it back   more ›
