National Hurricane Center reports formation of Tropical Storm Ernesto.
With the PGA Championship coming to Kiawah next week, all eyes will be on Tropical Storm Ernesto, which formed Thursday. Ernesto is forecasted to remain on its path toward the Gulf of Mexico, but at least one "spaghetti model" by Weather Underground shows it could hook north once in the gulf, and bringing wet weather later next week as the golf heats up in Charleston. Ernesto first formed Thursday afternoon, but forecasters at the National Hurricane Center said the storm had already weakened by 5 a.m. Friday. The storm has been called disorganized with few bursts of connectivity. Despite the weakening, forecast models still show the storm becoming a hurricane by Sunday. Increased chances that fourth Atlantic tropical system will form this weekend.
Forecasters said Friday evening that a storm system churning in the Gulf of Mexico has an 80-percent chance of developing into a named tropical storm this weekend. If it gains organization, Tropical Storm Debby will be the fourth named system of the 2012 Atlantic Hurricane Season. Located 100 miles north of the northeastern tip of the Yucatan Peninsula, within range of south Florida and Cuba, forecaster say the storm gained organization on Friday. "Surface pressures are still falling across the area, and shower and thunderstorm activity has been steadily increasing over much of the central and eastern Gulf of Mexico," a National Hurricane Center forecaster wrote. Weather service warns of localized flooding into Thursday.
Update: 5:10 p.m. Tuesday The National Weather Service is now predicting that the wet weather will stick around into Thursday. The heavy rain is expected to produce scattered showers and thunderstorms tonight. Possibly resulting in localized flooding. And more of the same is expected Wednesday and Thursday.
