Charleston Takes Hit in Looks Department

Magazine readers say residents of another coastal community are prettier.

San Juan? Say what?

That’s right, the tropical American territory has beaten out the Holy City to capture the title of American city with the most attractive residents, according to a poll by Travel + Leisure.

Last year, Charleston ranked No. 1 in the same survey but fell to No. 7 this year. No, your neighbors didn't get any less attractive, according to the magazine.

“I look and feel like a troll every time I'm in Charleston,” said one source. “Their bone structure, the preppy clothes, and the consistent—almost persistent—friendliness make everyone prettier.”

Like Charleston, many of the cities with the best-looking residents find themselves in warmer climates and the residents just seem happier, the magazine speculates.

Travel + Leisure readers just can't get enough of Charleston lately. The Lowcountry city has ended up on five of the magazine's "best of" lists in 2011. Ranked high for friendliness, boutique hotels, antiquing and food, the magazine's readership seems smitten with the city, even if it didn't find its residents to be in top form this year.
